What you are paying for

What is in a litre of petrol

On today's typical 161.9p litre of petrol, 52.95p is fuel duty and 26.98p is VAT, so about 49% of what you pay is tax. Duty stays at 52.95p until 31 December 2026, then rises to 55.95p on 1 January 2027 and 57.95p on 1 March 2027, and VAT is charged on the duty too. The rest covers the fuel itself, delivery and the forecourt's margin, which is where the local spread comes from.

Duty rates from HM Treasury's amended fuel duty rates for 2026 to 2027. VAT is 20%, so one sixth of the pump price.

Questions

Straight answers

How often are the prices updated?

Twice a day, every day. Forecourts have to report a price change within 30 minutes, and Petrol Tracker rebuilds every price on the site from each update. The figures on this page were updated at 10:00 on 28 August 2026.

Why does a price near me look wrong?

Every price is the forecourt's own, shown with the time it set it. If the pole sign says something different, the forecourt has not reported the change yet, which it is required to do. Tell the forecourt, and email corrections@petroltracker.co.uk so we can check.

Which forecourts are included?

All 8,066 registered UK forecourts, including supermarkets, motorway services and independents. Forecourts that are temporarily closed are left out until they reopen. The Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are not covered.

What do E10, E5, B7 and premium diesel mean?

E10 is standard unleaded with up to 10% ethanol, sold at almost every forecourt. E5 is super unleaded, 97 to 99 octane with up to 5% ethanol. B7 is standard diesel with up to 7% biodiesel. Premium diesel is the additive grade some forecourts sell alongside it. We show each grade separately because the gaps between them vary a lot by site.

Is the cheapest forecourt always the best choice?

Not always. Costco forecourts are members only and are tagged as such. A price that was set weeks ago may be stale, which is why every card shows when it was set and you can sort by freshest. And a 10p saving is worth about £5.50 on a 55 litre tank, so a long detour can cost more in fuel than it saves.

Do you track me or need an account?

No. Your postcode stays in your browser and is never sent to us or stored. There are no accounts, no cookies and no app. We count visits without cookies or personal data, so we can see which pages help. Price alerts are the one thing you can choose to give us an email for, and you can stop them in one click.

What do the price alerts do?

Tell us your postcode district and your fuel, and we email you when the cheapest forecourt near you drops or jumps by a penny or more, with its name and price, plus a short weekly note of the cheapest five in your district. They are free and you can unsubscribe from any email.

Where do the prices come from?

Every forecourt in the UK now has to publish its prices under the government's Fuel Finder scheme, and Petrol Tracker uses that open data directly. Nothing is scraped or estimated. The method page has the detail.
