What does a fuel loyalty scheme really save?

Points and pence off schemes sound generous. Enter your yearly fuel use and see what a scheme actually puts back in your pocket, and how it compares with simply buying at a cheaper forecourt.

What a scheme is really worth

Most supermarket fuel schemes work out at around half a penny a litre once you turn the points into money. Some branded forecourt schemes manage a penny or so. Occasional promotions, such as money off a litre when you spend in store, can be worth a few pence for a while. Enter your mileage and mpg and the calculator turns that per litre figure into pounds a year, which is usually a smaller number than the marketing suggests.

That does not make the schemes worthless. If you already shop at the store, the points are a free extra. The mistake is driving past a cheaper forecourt to collect them.

The comparison that matters

The second line of the result shows the same yearly litres at a forecourt that is simply cheaper, with the gap set at a typical few pence you can find between stations in most towns. It usually beats the loyalty saving by a wide margin, because a forecourt price gap applies to every litre at full value while points are a fraction of a penny. The best of both is to use the price finder to buy where it is cheapest and still collect points when the cheapest happens to be your supermarket. Our fuel offers page compares the current schemes.

Common questions

How much do Tesco Clubcard fuel points save?

Roughly half a penny a litre once converted to money. On a typical 1,000 litres a year that is around five pounds. A short term promotion offering several pence off a litre is worth more while it lasts.

Is a fuel loyalty card worth it?

As a free extra when you already shop there, yes. As a reason to choose a forecourt, usually not, because a station that is a few pence a litre cheaper saves far more over a year than the points are worth.

What saves more, loyalty points or a cheaper forecourt?

Almost always the cheaper forecourt. A price gap of a few pence applies in full to every litre, while points are typically worth a fraction of a penny a litre. Use the comparison line in the calculator to see the difference for your mileage.
