The motorway services penalty
Motorway services charge far more per litre than the forecourts a few miles off the junction. See what that costs you on one tank and across a year.

Why the services cost so much more
Motorway services sit on the far side of a captive market. Drivers who are low on fuel have nowhere else to go, the operators pay heavy rents for the site, and there is no competing forecourt in sight to keep the price honest. The result is a price per litre that sits well above the national typical figure, and even further above the supermarkets a few miles off the junction. The gap is not a few pence, it is often twenty pence or more a litre.
This calculator uses the current typical motorway price from the official data and compares it with the cheapest forecourt near your postcode district, or with a typical supermarket price if you leave the postcode blank, to show what that gap costs on a fill and across a year of motorway stops.
How to avoid it
Keep at least a quarter of a tank before a long journey, so you are never forced to stop at the services. Fill up before you join the motorway, or come off at a junction near a town where there is competition. Our price finder shows every forecourt within five miles of any postcode on your route, and the best time to buy fuel guide explains why a half full tank is the cheapest habit there is.
Common questions
How much more expensive is motorway fuel?
Typically twenty pence a litre or more above a supermarket forecourt, and well above the national typical price. On a 40 litre fill that is around eight pounds extra for the convenience, and more on a big tank.
Why is fuel at motorway services so expensive?
Because the customers have few alternatives, the sites pay high rents and there is no nearby competitor to hold prices down. Forecourts a few miles off the junction face competition and price far lower.
How do I avoid paying motorway fuel prices?
Set off with at least a quarter of a tank, fill up before joining the motorway, or leave at a junction near a town. Use the price finder on this site to spot a cheap forecourt close to your route.
