How the approved mileage rates work

If you use your own vehicle for work, HMRC lets your employer pay you a set amount per business mile free of tax. For cars and vans the rate is 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p a mile after that. Motorcycles get 24p a mile and bicycles 20p, with no 10,000 mile step. You can also claim 5p a mile for each colleague you carry as a passenger on a business journey. These are the approved mileage allowance payments, usually shortened to AMAP.

Ordinary commuting between home and your normal workplace does not count. Business miles are journeys you make for work beyond that, such as visiting clients, travelling between sites or going to a temporary workplace.

If your employer pays less than the rate

Your employer does not have to pay the full amount. If they pay less, or nothing, you can claim tax relief on the difference from HMRC, called mileage allowance relief. If they pay more than the approved rate, the excess is taxable. Keep a log of each business journey with the date, destination, purpose and miles, because that record is what supports the claim.

Company cars are different

These rates are for your own vehicle. If you drive a company car and only want to reclaim the fuel for business miles, HMRC publishes separate advisory fuel rates per mile by engine size and fuel type, which it updates every quarter, so check the current figures on the government website rather than using the rates above. Whichever you drive, the real fuel cost of those miles is easy to check with our fuel cost calculator.

Common questions

What is the HMRC mileage rate for 2026?

For cars and vans the approved rate is 45p a mile for the first 10,000 business miles in the tax year and 25p a mile after that. Motorcycles are 24p a mile and bicycles 20p, and you can add 5p a mile per passenger carried for work.

Can I claim mileage for driving to work?

No. Ordinary commuting between home and your normal workplace is not business mileage. You can claim for journeys beyond that, such as visiting clients, travelling between sites or going to a temporary workplace.

What if my employer pays less than 45p a mile?

You can claim tax relief on the difference between what they paid and the approved rate, known as mileage allowance relief. Keep a log of each business journey with the date, destination, purpose and miles to support the claim.

Do these rates apply to a company car?

No. Company car drivers reclaiming fuel for business miles use HMRC's advisory fuel rates, which are set per mile by engine size and fuel type and updated quarterly. Check the current advisory rates on the government website.
